What is a Learnership and How Do You Apply for One?

For many South African school leavers and graduates, finding a job without experience feels impossible.

That is where a learnership comes in.

It is one of the best ways to gain work experience, earn a qualification, and get paid at the same time.If you are confused about how learnerships work, how much you will get paid, or how to apply, this beginner's guide is for you.

What Exactly is a Learnership?

A learnership is a structured work-based learning programme that combines classroom theory with practical on-the-job experience.

These programmes are registered with the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and typically last between 12 to 24 months.Unlike a standard university degree where you pay tuition, a learnership allows you to study for a recognized qualification while working for an employer who covers the costs.

How Much is the Monthly Stipend?

You do not earn a full salary during a learnership, but you do receive a monthly allowance called a stipend. This stipend is meant to cover your basic expenses like transport and food.

The exact amount depends on the company, the SETA, and your current level of education. Legally, the Department of Employment and Labour sets minimum stipend rates:

Grade 12 / Matriculants: Generally earn between R2,500 and R3,500 per month.

National Diploma / Degree Holders: Generally earn between R4,000 and R7,000+ per month.

How Do Learnerships Lead to Permanent Employment?Learnerships are a massive win for your career. Here is why:Work Experience: You get a full year of real-world corporate experience to put on your CV.Free Qualification: You walk away with an officially registered NQF-level certificate.

The Inside Track: Companies use learnerships to test out fresh talent. If you work hard, arrive on time, and show a great attitude, many companies will offer you a permanent job contract once the learnership ends

How to Apply for a LearnershipCheck the Requirements: Most learnerships require you to be a South African citizen, aged between 18 and 35, with a Matric certificate.Keep Your Documents Ready: You will always need a certified copy of your ID, your Matric certificate, and an updated CV.Where to Find Them: Major companies advertise learnership intakes between August and January. At Subsera, we track and publish the latest verified learnership openings daily.
