How to Get Hired as a Cleaner: A Practical Guide
Finding work as a cleaner is about showing you are reliable, thorough, and trustworthy. You don't need a degree, but you do need to prove you take the work seriously.
1. What Employers Actually Look For
Most managers and homeowners hire for attitude first, skills second. Highlight these in your CV and interview:
• Reliability and punctuality: You show up on time, every time
• Attention to detail: You notice dust, stains, and corners others miss
• Honesty and trustworthiness: You will be working in private homes, offices, and shops
• Physical stamina: You can stand, bend, and lift for long periods
• Knowledge of products: You know how to use detergents, disinfectants, and equipment safely
If you have experience with mopping, sweeping, bathroom sanitation, kitchen cleaning, window cleaning, laundry, or operating a vacuum / buffing machine, list it specifically.
2. Make a Simple, Strong CV
You don't need a long CV. One page is enough.
Example structure:
Name: [Your Full Name]
Contact: Phone, WhatsApp, Area - Messina, Limpopo
Profile: Hardworking and honest cleaner with 2 years experience in house and office cleaning. Available immediately, own transport.
Skills: General cleaning, bathroom & toilet sanitation, kitchen cleaning, laundry and ironing, safe use of cleaning chemicals
Work Experience:
Private Home, Musina - Cleaner (2023 - 2025) - Cleaned 3-bedroom house twice a week

Even if you have never had a formal job, add domestic work for family, church cleaning, or volunteer work.
3. Where to Find Cleaner Jobs Around Messina
• Walk-in with a CV: Lodges, guesthouses, clinics, schools, supermarkets (Shoprite, Boxer, Spar), and office parks in Musina / Messina always need cleaners. Ask for the manager.
• Online: http://Indeed.co.za, http://PNet.co.za, LinkedIn, and Facebook groups like "Jobs in Limpopo" and "Musina Jobs"
• Cleaning agencies: Agencies like Fidelity Cleaning Services, Tsebo, Servest, and local labour brokers hire cleaners for contracts
• Word of mouth: Tell everyone you are looking. Most cleaning jobs are filled by referral.
4. How to Stand Out When You Apply
• Dress clean and neat when you drop your CV
• Bring your ID copy, proof of address, and police clearance if you have it. Many employers ask for it.
• Prepare a short introduction: "Good morning, my name is ___, I am looking for work as a cleaner. I am hardworking, honest, and I have experience cleaning houses and offices."
• If applying on WhatsApp, send a short message + your CV as a PDF, not just "Hi, any jobs?"
5. Interview Tips
They will likely ask:
• "What cleaning products do you know?" - Mention Handy Andy, bleach, Pine Gel, Sunlight, Domestos, and that you never mix bleach and other chemicals.
• "How do you clean a bathroom?" - Explain your steps to show you have a system.
• "Are you okay with extra hours or weekends?" - Be clear about your availability.
Always emphasize: you leave a place cleaner than you found it, you respect privacy, and you follow instructions.
